The Bedok Kings Rugby Club have been at the forefront of the Singapore Rugby Community since our inclusion into the NRC in 1996. The "Team from the East" have never looked back since incorporating rugby talent the world over - We include National coaches and management with National Singaporean players frequently taking to the pitch in our Red,White and Blue.
As the SRU has evolved so have the Bedok Kings, raising the bar for a complete club experience year in year out. From U12s to 1st Grade men's, each and every team has been able to add to our glowing success on the field culminating in 1st grade premierships victories 3 out of the last 4 years Winning premierships and games week in week out is only a part of a successful club's agenda.
The club's management has adapted and in turn excelled in the ever changing Singapore Rugby scene - as a result we have a great relationship with the SRU and have been involved in most if not all of their planned competitions and activities each year. Bedok's large and diverse club membership has given us opportunities to explore many new and exciting sponsorship options. As the monetary support for the club grows as does our ability to take our amazing game of Rugby to the Heartlands of Singapore.
The main aim and policy of the Bedok Kings is to be a place where young Singaporeans both male and female can meet, grow and excel in life skills through the fantastic sport of RUGBY!
Bedok Kings RFC began in 1996 when the local club rugby competition was expanded following the departure of the NZ Army troops from Singapore. The local league in those days comprised 10 clubs of 2 divisions - Bedok Kings, Blacks, Bucks, Lion Red, Northern Knights, Police, SAFSA, SCC, SRC and Wanderers. The Bedok ranks of 1996 comprised a mixture of Japanese, Australian, New Zealand and Singapore talent and though the results were modest - no wins in either grade for the season - the teams were at least competitive. Importantly the club played with a spirit that was probably forged more off the field and the scene was set for the club to become a force in Singapore rugby over a few short years.
The second season 1997 saw an improvement in performance overall, although the club was only able to chalk up a single win in First Grade for the season. It was encouraged however by some narrow defeats to well established clubs. 1998 was a turning point for the club with a host of new playing talent arriving in Singapore and being drawn to Bedok Kings. Although not totally dominating there were enough wins for both the First and Second grade sides to make it into the semi-finals. Though both sides were defeated by the eventual league champions in both grades the season was a major improvement.
Thus the scene was set for the 1999 season. In the preseason NRC 7's, Black 10's and NRC 10's, Bedok Kings showed their potential with final and semi-final placings. But from the start of the M1 league campaign, it was clear that the Bedok Kings were going to dominate the 15 a-side game and that they did winning both the minor premiership and league final against Wanderers to be Singapore champions for the first time. Further league final victories came in 2000 against Wanderers and 2001 against Bucks and thus completed the first of the clubs 3-peat of final victories. The 2002-2004 seasons brought on field success with the Bedok Kings 2nd grade winning back to back minor premierships in 2003 and 2004. Seasons 2005-07 brought a second 3-peat of league final victories over Bucks (2005), Bucks (2006) and SCC 2007) with the outstanding feature of these wins being the high number of Singaporean players playing in these winning First Grade sides.
Since the early years the club has expanded to include Touch Football and Netball sections and success has ensued for both of those sections in their respective leagues. It is the objective of the Bedok Kings to remain a quality rugby playing and sports club and to continue to be the most socially dynamic sporting association in Singapore. With this in mind we will continue to drive the game's development at school, club and country level on the rugby front, while attracting the best expatriate talent arriving in Singapore. If you like to play rugby, touch or netball at the highest level, and/or enjoy a lively social scene, don't hesitate to join the best!
